SHORTERVILLE. . .Elizabeth Brown Hilyer, a resident of Shorterville, died late Tuesday night, June 7, 2016, at her home. She was 87.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 10, 2016, in the Shorterville Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Douglas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Friday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Rossie Money, 2457 County Road 91, Abbeville, AL 36310.


            Mrs. Hilyer was born and reared in Billingsley, Alabama in Autauga County, daughter of the late Herman Brown, Sr. and Mollie Hilyer Brown. She moved to Shorterville in 1954 and was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing Co. to train employees at the new facility in the Abbeville plant. She retired from WestPoint Stevens as a Supervisor after thirty-five years employment. Mrs. Hilyer attended Troy University where she received a B.A. Degree in Accounting. She was an active member of the Shorterville Baptist Church and formerly served as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Hilyer was preceded in death by a son, Freddie Lee Hilyer, Jr., a daughter, Julia Bryan Owens, four sisters, Mattie Chandler, Maggie Helms, Nora Clemmons and Geraldine Williams, and four brothers, J. T. Brown, Jessie Brown, Herman Brown, Jr and Earnest Brown.


            Surviving relatives include a son, Joseph E. Hilyer, Sr. (Felicia), Abbeville; a son-in-law, Charles Owens, Dothan; six grandchildren, Joseph E. Hilyer, Jr., Samuel T. Hilyer (Natalie), Elizabeth J. Hilyer, Brandon Owens (Katie Beth), Alicia Owens, and Susan McDaniel; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Thomas Murphy, Johnny Starling, Robert Edward Phillips, Johnny Littlefield, Josh Kennedy and Phil Chandler.
