Essie Norris Carpenter, of Samson, passed away on November 29, 2016. She was 89. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2016, in the chapel of Pittman Funeral Home in Samson with Rev. Phillip Barnes, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Samson directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.


Mrs. Carpenter was born in Coffee County, Alabama on August 6, 1927, to the late Cletus Norris and Freeda Hattaway. She was a longtime member of Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church. She loved tending to and sharing her flowers, and she dearly loved her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chan Oliver Carpenter; two daughters, Gail Wright and Gloria Diane Walker; grandson, Greg Wright; great-grandson, Stephen Mullins; and sister, Pauline Berry.


She is survived by two sisters, Bessie Jacobs (Paul) of Elba and Christine Jackson of Ozark; two brothers, Elbert Norris of Jasper, FL and Willie Ray Norris of Dade City, FL; three grandsons, Donald and Doug Mullins, and Michael Wright; one granddaughter, Deann Fawcett; great-grandson, Wesley Fawcett; and four great-granddaughters, Kaitlan Mullins, Rhianna Fawcett, Patience Mullins and Emily Mullins.
