Frances Newlin Borland March 12, 1942 - February 12, 2019 Frances Gayle Newlin Borland went home to be with the Lord February 12, 2019, surrounded by her family at Sacred Heart Hospital in Destin, Florida. She is a resident of Birmingham, AL. Fran was born in Decatur, Alabama to Donald Murray Newlin and Katherine Hardiman on March 12, 1942. Her father served in three wars, retiring as an Army Major.


She started her school years in Decatur and was a talented trumpet and French horn player in high school for Butler High School, Huntsville. She was a Butler High majorette, then Drum Leader. She moved to Birmingham, graduating from Ensley High School in 1960. In February of 1962, she married Robert Quinn Borland, an oral surgery resident at UAB.


They moved to Dothan in 1964 with their first two daughters (Laurie and Leisha), to set up an Oral Surgery practice there. They had two more children, daughter Robiann and son Quinn. Fran was president of the Dothan Junior League, a long time Girl Scout Leader and dedicated volunteer for Save-A-Life Ministry in Dothan. Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death in October 2003. She and her entire family honored him a year later by opening a dental clinic in the Amazon jungle of Brazil in his name.


Fran married Roy Gagliano in September 2006, returning to her former hometown of Birmingham. Fran loved to dance, cook and serve others. She is survived by daughter Laurie Borland Montgomery of Columbia, TN; daughter Leisha Borland Hall (Mark) of Dothan; daughter Robiann Borland Gilbert (Brent) of Dothan; and son Robert Quinn Borland, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Marietta, GA. She leaves behind eight grandchildren.


A visitation and memorial service will be held in Dothan Saturday, February 16th at 1:00 p.m., at Westwood Presbyterian Church and graveside service to follow at Memory Hill Cemetary. Donations may be made to Sacred Heart Hospital / Emerald Coast ICU unit in Destin, FL in lieu of flowers.
