George Alex “Rocky” Sutherland, Jr of Wewahitchka, FL passed away on May 15, 2017 at Bay Medical Center. He was 65.


Graveside services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Travelers Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Jewel and Rev Phil Craddock officiating and Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and continue until 6:45 p.m.


In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Tate Sutherland Scholarship Fund, c/o Samson Banking Company, 2 West Main St, Samson, AL 36477.


Mr. Sutherland was born in Ft. Myers, FL to the late George Alex and Elfrieda Houghton Sutherland, Sr. Rocky played football at Ft. Myers High School where he was a Southwest Florida football star. He was also an accomplished baseball catcher. Rocky was a Florida Cracker and one of the last original cowboys who hunted and worked off horse back. At an early age, Rocky began showing cattle and this led to his career as a cattleman and rancher. He served as the youngest member on the board of the BBU (Beefmaster Breeders Universal).  He was of the Methodist faith and a spiritual man.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Warren Tate Sutherland “Tater Bug”.


He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Sutherland of Wewahitchka, FL; two sons, Cory Sutherland (Crystal) of Samson, AL and Alex Sutherland of Charlotte, NC; loving nephew, Greg Summerall (Tiffany) of Ft. Myers, FL;   six grandchildren, Elena Grace Sutherland, Corbin Donivic Sutherland, Colman Jebediah (Jeb) Sutherland, Jayden Renee Atkinson, Taylor Renee Summerall, and Riley Lynn Summerall; two sisters, Lynda Kay Turner (Gene), and Gayle Durrance both of Naples, FL; one brother, Rick Sutherland of Ocala, FL; special nieces and nephews, Ryan, Kyle, Jenna, Julie, and Alexis.


Serving as pallbearers will be: Derek Warren, Jody Taylor, Justin Taylor, Ashley Simmons, Jason Haney, Jeff Jennings, Matt, Ingalls and Duece Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be: Tom Hall, Donnie White, Greg McCollough, Mike Morgan, Mike Tompkins, and Dick Chastain.
