ROCKY HEAD COMMUNITY… Mr. James A. Whitehead, a resident of the Rocky Head Community, near Ariton, died late Saturday evening, June 30, 2018 at his home. He was 82.


            Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, July 2, 2018 at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Rocky Head Community, with Reverend Joe Underwood and Reverend Bill Weed officiating. Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the graveside.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive Cemetery Fund c/o, Gerald Goodson, 1681 Highway 51, Ariton, AL 36311 or to Southern Care Hospice, 2576 Montgomery Highway, Suite 2, Dothan, AL 36301.


            Mr. Whitehead, son of the late Rayvon Albert Whitehead and Rillie Mae Pipkins Whitehead, was a native of Dale County near Ariton. He was a 1954 graduate of Ariton High School. Mr. Whitehead formerly lived in Dothan, Geneva, Brewton and the Montgomery area before returning to Ariton in 2005. He was retired from the loan company industry after fifty-five years employment and also retired from the State of Alabama Bureau of Loans as a supervisor in 2004. Mr. Whitehead was a member of Rocky Head Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Agnes Sammons.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of fifty-eight years, June Smith Whitehead, Rocky Head Community; a daughter, Sandra Gamble (John), Hartselle, AL; a son, James S. Whitehead, Sr., Rocky Head Community; three grandchildren, Jennifer Fowler (Nathan), Jessica Harpe (Jacob), and Jimmy Whitehead (Savannah Elizabeth); three great-grandchildren, Bella Fowler, Hunter Michael Whitehead, Cooper Brooke Whitehead and one great-grandchild on the way; a brother-in-law, Gerald Sammons, Ariton.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Max Willoughby, Jimmy Whitehead, Nathan Fowler, Jake Harpe, Kevin Johnson, Gerald Goodson, and Bob Floyd; honorary pallbearers will be Fairlan Mobley, Don Gown, Odell Cash, and Billy Logan.
