James Alexander (Alex) Dauphin, a resident of Dothan, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017 quietly in the company of his family. He was 89.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Dothan with Rev. Allie Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends in the church Parlor on Tuesday from 1-2 pm. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Dothan.


Alex Dauphin was born on August 11, 1928 in Coffee County, Alabama, the son of the late Lottie and Alva Dauphin of Coffee Springs, Alabama. Alex married Evelyn Weeks in 1949 and they moved to Dothan to begin a loving marriage of 57 years. His life was one dedicated to his family, his church, and friends, of which there were many. Evelyn and Alex raised 3 children in Dothan who are reflections of his strong character and ideals.


Alex and Evelyn Dauphin were founding members of First United Methodist Church in Dothan when it moved from Foster Street and was established on Main Street. He was an active member of the Pathfinders Sunday School class and couple’s groups at First United Methodist Church.


Alex served as Scout Master of Troop 38 and was actively involved with Kiwanis and Civitan Service Clubs. Alex and Evelyn were enthusiastic members of the Do Sa Do Square Dance group in Dothan and often traveled for dance events throughout the state.

Surviving family and relatives include a daughter, Theresa Dauphin Sorrell and husband John A. Sorrell of Dothan; 2 sons, Charles A. Dauphin and wife Diane Paris of Birmingham, AL and David A. Dauphin and wife Teresa Martin Dauphin of Dothan; 7 grandchildren, Matthew Sorrell and wife Nancy Sorrell of Union, KY, Kathleen Morris and husband John Morris of Dothan, Ali Goodrich and husband Charles Goodrich of Birmingham, Greer Mehler and husband Josh Mehler of Tampa, FL, Ry Dauphin of Austin, TX, Patrick Dauphin and wife Kayla Fox Dauphin of Dothan, and Andrew Dauphin of Birmingham; 9 great-grandchildren, Anna, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Ben Sorrell of Union, KY, Jay and David Morris of Dothan, Gillian, Susannah and Caroline Goodrich of Birmingham.


All the members of the Pathfinders Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
