James Allen Williams of Level Plains passed away quietly at his home early Sunday morning, September 30, 2018, from an extended illness.  He was 71 years old.


Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Billy Luttrell officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.


Jim was born October 19, 1946 in Roscoe, IL as the second son of the late Woodman G. Williams and Edith Carriker Williams.  He is predeceased by his beloved grandson Travis, and brother-in-law Hank. 


Jim was a member of First United Methodist Church of Enterprise.  He was known for his intelligence and quick wit; he had many friends and was a master carpenter, auto mechanic, electrician and inventor.  He loved old cars and had collected and restored many during his lifetime.  Jim was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather, patriot, and citizen of his community.


He joined the Army in 1964 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.  In his early enlistment, he was a helicopter crew chief in the 128th Assault Helicopter Company where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces, an Air Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) for Heroism while Participating in Aerial Flight, and an Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while Participating in Aerial Flight.  Later he became a Manual Morse Interceptor for the ASA/INSCOM Military Intelligent Group for which he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service for leadership, initiative, and innovative problem solving techniques.  Jim attended Northern Arizona University as a student of the Mechanical Engineering College and returned to Alabama where he settled and eventually retired. 


Jim met and married his wife of fifty one years, Sarah Fisher in Enterprise, AL in 1967.  They have two children, James Michael Williams (Seunghui) of Centreville, VA and Jennifer Anne Williams Richards (Don) of Enterprise, AL.  Jim and Sarah have five grandchildren:  Lee Yeon Yi, Savannah Rae Grantham, Travis Allen Williams Richards, Rebeccah Anne Williams Richards, and Caroline Faith Williams Richards; six siblings:  Woodman Jr. (Yolanda), Jeffrey Charles (Jettie) and Mary Zieman all of Ocala, FL; Joel David (Anne) of Boise, ID, Jack Winfield (Michelle) of Dublin, OH and Judith Thomas (Rod) of Tucson, AZ as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
