HEADLAND. . .James Edward Gilder, Sr., a resident of Headland, died Thursday afternoon, June 8, 2017, in a Dothan hospital. He was 78.


            Graveside services, with full military honors, will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 11:30 A.M. until 12:45 PM Tuesday at the mortuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery Fund, 2506 State Highway 134 East, Headland, AL 36345.


            Mr. Gilder was born and reared in Henry County, near Headland, son of the late John Thomas Gilder and Ellen Inez Parrish Gilder. He was retired as a Staff Sergeant from the U. S. Army and served his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Gilder was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Kyle and Donald Graham, and a brother, Kenneth Lamar Gilder.


            Surviving relatives include a daughter, Sheila Graham (Richard), Lakeland, FL; a son, James E. Gilder, Jr. (Angela), Dover, New Jersey; two sisters, Johnnie Edmondson, Headland; and Patsy Blevins (Harvey), Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Shelby Gilder, Headland; six grandchildren, Amanda, Kendall, Jessica, Priscilla, Peggy and Ciara;  eleven great-grandchildren, and the mother of his children, Peggy Coonley, Lakeland, FL.
