JOEL   CLINTON   DEVANE

ASHFORD. . .Joel Clinton Devane, 71, of Ashford, died peacefully April 29, 2018, at his home,  with the love of his life, his wife Jacquelyn Lenderman Devane at his bedside.

Joel was born January 14, 1947 in Houston County, AL and lived in the Ashford area most of his life. He was retired from the Army National Guard and Pemco Aeroplex. He courageously fought colorectal cancer and survived 12 years dealing with a colostomy and many surgeries to repair muscle weakness. However, the many years of smoking led to COPD which eventually took his life. He recently suffered a TIA which he could not overcome. Joel was a graduate of the Ashford High School Class of 1965 and attended Troy State University in Troy for one year. He played all sports while in high school. He never met a stranger and was well known for his abilities in repairing and refurbishing furniture. He continued that hobby until his health no longer allowed. Numerous people from outside this area would bring family heirloom furnishings for him to repair, refinish or refurbish.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 22 years, Jacquelyn Lenderman Devane, Ashford; a brother-in-law, Jeffrey Lenderman, Daphne, AL; and the light of his life, his niece, Alexandra Lenderman of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and his canine girlfriend, Maggie Mae. He was predeceased by his parents, Ennis Ray Devane and Rossie Hall Devane both of Ashford. He lost his only sibling Martha Ray Mills Hobbs in 2001.He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Zephy Nie Ham and Johnnie Myra Ham of Dothan.

At his request he will be cremated and buried near his parents in the Ashford City Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers, food or visits be made.

His wife requests that anyone wishing to make donations in Joel’s name send them to the Ashford Rescue Squad, 205 Midland Street, Ashford, AL 36312. They were always there with their professional and personal needs of not only Joel but also Jacquelyn when needed to assist in his home health care. We would like to express a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Will Hundley and his nurse, Angie.
