John Abner Moates, age 72, of Enterprise, AL passed away, Friday, March 15, 2019 in Medical Center Enterprise.


Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Monday, March 18, 2019 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Ben Bowden and Rev. Sonny Moore officiating.  Burial will follow in Enterprise City Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.  The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 12:30 P.M. until 2:15 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, 302 North Main Street, Enterprise, AL 36330 or to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E. Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago. IL 60611.


John graduated from Enterprise High School in 1964. He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and a Master’s degree in Counseling.  He was a Counselor in the Enterprise School system for 39 years. 


John was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Harris (Pat) Moates, Sr.  and Anne Rogers Moates and his sister, Mary Moates Joines.


Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Maxine Atwood Moates, Enterprise, AL; son, Justin Atwood Moates, Atlanta, GA; daughter, Amanda Moates Secrest (David) Atlanta, GA; three grandsons, Jackson, Collier and Clay Secrest, Atlanta, GA; brother, Tom Moates (Carolyn) Enterprise, AL; sister-in-law, Olivia Atwood Williams, Montgomery, AL; aunt, Charlotte Moates Clark, Elba, AL; 8 nieces and nephews; his special caregiver, Alex Shipmon.


Honorary pallbearers will be members of John’s Sunday School Class and the deacons of First Baptist Church.
