John Wilson Goodnight, Jr., a resident of Dothan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. He was 78.


Funeral services will be held at 11 am Wednesday March 1, 2017 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gamaskus Vickers officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.


John Wilson Goodnight, Jr. was born on June 13, 1938 to the late John Wilson Goodnight, Sr. and Thelma B. Frye at Sewickley, Pennsylvania. John remained in Pennsylvania where he graduated from high school.


After graduating John W. Goodnight, Jr. joined the armed forces of the United States of America Air Force. John travelled far and abroad while serving our country and later retired and resided in Headland, Alabama. John worked for many years after retirement from the military with DSI Security where he also retired. John was currently working at Headland Head Start where he was adored and loved by the staff, participants, parents, and the community which he lived.


John W. Goodnight, Jr. was a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church #2 in Dothan, Alabama. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Headland, AL. John was proceeded in death by his parents, a father-in-law, and his step-son James Lorenzo Dawsey.


John W. Goodnight, Jr., leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Ruby J. Goodnight; a daughter, Elaine Carmela Goodnight; son, Samuel Bernard Goodnight both of Darlington, SC; step-son, Rondy (Stephanie) Dawsey; Debra Saffold, and Shanteena (Willie) Williams all of Dothan, AL.; mother-in-law, Gussie Dawsey; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of loved ones and friends.
