JOSEPH  EARL  HILYER,  SR.

ABBEVILLE. . .Joseph Earl “Joe” Hilyer, Sr., a resident of Abbeville, died late Wednesday afternoon, May 23,2018, in a Dothan hospital. He was 71.

            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 27, 2018, in the Old Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Matthew Quincey officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.

            Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111.

            Joe Hilyer was born Prattville, Alabama and moved to Shorterville with his family as a child. He was a 1965 graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Troy University. Joe received a Bachelor’s Degree while serving in the military. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1969 and retired with rank of Lieutenant Commander after twenty-seven years service. Joe served his county during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal Third Strike/Flight Award, the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and various other medals and awards.  After retirement from the military, he was employed as an Ordinance & Safety Officer with the U. S. Civil Service in San Diego, California. Joe returned to Henry County in 2008 and was a member of the Old Zion Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Freddie Lee Hilyer, Sr., his mother, Elizabeth Brown Hilyer, a brother, Freddie Lee Hilyer, Jr. and a sister, Julia Ann Owens.

            Surviving relatives include his wife, Felicia Strickland Hix Hilyer; a daughter, Elizabeth Hilyer, Vacaville, CA; four sons, Joe Hilyer, Jr., Vacaville, CA; Sam Hilyer (Natalie), Anacortes, WA; Ronnie Hix, Chicago, Illinois; and Anthony Hix (Melissa), Abbeville; a brother-in-law, Charles Owens, Dothan; twelve grandchildren, Stephanie Grant (Jason), Grant Hilyer, Baylie Hilyer, Samantha Hilyer, Joseph Hilyer, III, Kyle Hilyer, Logan Hilyer, Garrett Hilyer, T. J. Hix (Kassidy), Katie Rollins (Richard), Rachel Hix and Bekah Hix; seven great-grandchildren.
