Kathryn Gilmore Hardwick passed away on January 31, 2018

On January 31, Kathryn Hardwick, 94 born on August 23, 1923, was called to be with God. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wiley Hardwick, Senior. The Hardwicks have three children: Kathy H. W. McCrary of Bronwood, Wiley, Jr. of Cuthbert and Jonathan of St. Simons, Island. There are seven grandchildren Chad Hardwick, Jim Webb, Gene Webb, Tyler Webb Kelly Revels and Hannah Hardwick Allen. In addition, there are fifteen great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Kathryn was the daughter of the late Beulah Jones Gilmore and John H. Gilmore of Bay Springs Community, a farming area near Dothan, Alabama. Kathryn was the only girl, and surviving sibling of three brothers, Clyde, Harold and Herman Gilmore. Her brothers are survived by four nephews and several great-nephews and a great niece.


 Kathryn graduated from Wicksburg High School with a burning desire to obtain a college degree. A Scholarship from the DAR was a start toward realization of her dreams. With little money, and big determination, she began her quest for higher education at Troy State and received her BS from Auburn University in 1944. She acquired a Master of Science from Georgia Southwestern State University in 1975. In 1979 she received an Educational Specialists Degree from Columbus State University. She earned two additional Educational Specialists degrees from Georgia Southwestern State and Columbus State.


 Kathryn taught Chemistry, Physics and Home Economics at Andrew College prior to its becoming coeducational. She was also a partner in the family Western Auto business for over 49 years.


 In Stewart County, she served as Assistant Principal, and then District TestMath Coordinator. In Randolph County, she served as Superintendent of Schools for eight years. She was the oldest living member of the Cuthbert United Methodist Church and was active for many years.


 Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Cuthbert United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 in the church.


 In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cuthbert United Methodist Church or to Andrew College.
