ASHFORD. . .Laura N. McCraney, a resident of the Pleasant Plains community in Houston County, died Sunday morning, August 21, 2016, at her home. She was 87.

            Memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 3, 2016, in the Center Baptist Church, near Webb. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

            Ms. McCraney was born in the state of New York, daughter of the late Urho Itkonen and Vera Tammelander Itkonen. She moved to the Pleasant Plains community twenty years ago. Ms. McCraney was a member of the Center Baptist Church. A retired employee of the Houston County Board of Education, she was formerly employed as a school bus driver and in the lunch room at the Houston County High School in Columbia. She served as a caregiver for several individuals in the Dothan area and also kept children in the nursery at New Freedom Church in Webb. Ms. McCraney was a dedicated and loving mother. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth McCraney Lawson, and a brother, Armas Nekton.           

            Surviving relatives include a daughter Patricia (Patsy) McCraney, Monroe, Michigan; three sons, Jim McCraney (Donna), Ashford; William S. (Chris) McCraney, Beach City, Ohio; and Matthew A. McCraney (Donna), Webb, AL; five grandchildren, Bubba McCraney, Cheyenne McCraney, Alex Lawson, Jacob Eldridge and Kayla McCraney; three step-grandchildren, Johnny Jones, Steven Jones and Cody Livingston.

            The family would like to express their appreciation to Wanda Barber, their compassionate sitter, and to Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Ms. McCraney during her illness.
