OZARK…. Mr. Laurel D.  “Sandy” Sand, a resident of Ozark, died early Friday afternoon, July 27, 2018 at his home. He was 93.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 30, 2018 in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel with Reverend Michael Sigler officiating. Graveside services with military rites will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens. Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ozark-Dale County Humane Society, 579 Bivins Drive, Ozark, AL 36360 or to the Ozark Animal Control Shelter, 1315 Parker Drive, Ozark, AL 36360.


            Mr. Sand, son of the late William Sand and Ada Parker Sand, was born in Geneseo, Illinois and was reared in Buffalo, Wyoming. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a fixed wing pilot. Mr. Sand also lived in Sheridan, Wyoming where he served in the Army National Guard, which was activated during the Korean War. He lived in Portland, Oregon, Mineral Wells, Texas before moving to Ozark in 1962. Mr. Sand was an Instructor Pilot at Ft. Rucker and was retired as an Aviation Safety Specialist from the United States Civil Service. He enjoyed restoring, driving and showing his 1929 Model A Ford and he loved his family especially making the grandchildren laugh. Mr. Sand was preceded in death by his siblings, Ethel S. Fairlie, William A. Sand, Margaret S. Goryl, Robert L. Sand, and Arlyn P. Sand.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty-eight years, Patricia Lewis Sand, Ozark; two daughters, Sheryl S. Bagley(Johnny), Wetumpka and Debbie S. Whittaker (Michael),Ozark; his son, Gregory D. Sand (Michelle), Mobile; six grandchildren, Derek Bagley(Beth), Ryan Bagley(April), Eric Sand, Adam Whittaker, Kelly Carmichael(Ben), and Laura Kennington(T.J.) and one great-grandson on the way.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Derek Bagley, Ryan Bagley, Eric Sand, Adam Whittaker, Johnny Bagley and Michael Whittaker.
