Mary Ellen Powell of Geneva passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017.  She was 70.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jake Brady and Rev. Dana Brady, officiating.  Interment will follow at the Geneva City Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 304 S. Academy St. Geneva, AL 36340, or to Midway United Methodist Church, 31 Rum Rd, Westville, FL, 32464.

Mrs. Powell was born in Enterprise, AL on July 13, 1946.  She graduated from Geneva High School, Class of 1964.  She then received her undergraduate degree from Mobile College and an advanced degree from Troy State University.  She was a teacher at Geneva High School for more than thirty-five years, where she taught Democracy and American History.  She sponsored the Annual Staff, Senior Class, Student Council, History Club, Prep Bowl Team, and many other student clubs and associations.

She loved to travel, especially all throughout Europe; having chaperoned countless students all over the globe.  Following her retirement, Mrs. Powell was led to become a minister.  She served the congregation of Midway United Methodist Church for several years.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Bill and Martha Steely and her husband, Alton C. Powell. 

She is survived by her cousins, Marilyn Snellgrove (Charles) and Jill Brand (Douglas); and a host of former students, colleagues, and friends.
