Mary Emma Gilley, a resident of Newton, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 at her residence. She was 76.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 21, 2018 at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Glover and Robbie Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at Sunset Funeral Home on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 5-7 pm.


Mrs. Gilley was born on December 31, 1941 in Dale County and lived there all her life. She attended Newton Elementary School and graduated from Midland City High School in 1960. Mrs. Gilley worked at Dothan Hosiery Mill and later with TRW for several years until her medical retirement in 1991. She was co-owner of P.G. Trucking Company for 32 years. Mrs. Gilley was a great mother figure for all who knew her. Mrs. Gilley should be remembered as a devout Christian, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who always had a kind word to say and a cheerful smile. She left a lasting impression with all who met her. She loved to grow flowers and gardening. Mrs. Gilley read her bible every day, her favorite verse being Romans 8:28. She was also a certified cat lover all her life and was known as the cat lady. Mrs. Gilley was life long member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church where she served in several capacities including, secretary, treasurer, and playing the piano.


Mrs. Gilley was preceded in death by her son, Anthony Gilley, by her sister, Robbie Lee Beasley, and by her parents, Earl and Erma Beasley.


Survivors include her husband of 59 years, James Gilley; her son, Phillip Dewayne (Nancy) Gilley; her 2 grandchildren, Ashley Gilley (Dave) Eubank and Kassidy Ann Gilley; her great-grandchildren, Addison Brooke Everett and Allie David Eubank; her brother, Robert Earl (Ruby) Beasley; her sister, Betty Faye (Michael) Passarelli; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a very sincere thanks to Encompass Home Health and Hospice staff including, Jamie Gilley, Kelli Daniels, Debbie Prim, Wendy Adams, Alexis, and Bobby. They also wish to extend thanks to Dr. Gwen and his staff including Rhonda Peters for the wonderful care given to Mrs. Gilley during her time of need.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Fred Avant, Greg Langston, Jeff Adkinson, Dave Eubank, Micah McNab, and Bill Edwards.


Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Mt. Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
