DOTHAN. . .Mary Nell Calhoun Ponder, a resident of Dothan, passed away early Sunday morning, November 27, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, in the Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was 83.


            Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. (C.S.T.) Monday, November 28, 2016, in Memory Hill Cemetery, Hartford Highway, Dothan with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. officiating.  Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the graveside services.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302 or a favorite charity.


            Mrs. Ponder was born in Henry County and grew up near Columbia on the family farm, daughter of the late Vernon Henry Calhoun and Leila Roland Calhoun. She was a graduate of the Houston County High School in Columbia. Mrs. Ponder later attended the University of Alabama. She enjoyed teaching Chemistry and Physics at Headland High School. Mrs. Ponder was instrumental in expanding the Girl Scout program for Southeast Alabama and developing three camps in her position as Field Director. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan. Mrs. Ponder was a charter member and co-founder of the Zonta Club of Dothan and was also involved in United Way. In earlier years, she coached girls basketball at Houston Academy. Mrs. Ponder’s hobbies included tennis, golf, bowling and Crimson Tide Football. She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Roland and a sister, Debbie Davis.


            Surviving relatives include her husband, Van Thomas Ponder, Sr.; two daughters, Charlotte Ponder Schwartz (Winston), Orlando, FL; and Mary Lou Ponder (Dan), Donalsonville, GA; a son, Tommy Ponder (Gail), Dothan; a sister, Grace Roland Howard, Crestview, FL; a brother, Charles Arthur Calhoun, Columbia; four grandchildren, Joseph Schwartz (Lindsay), Catherine Vanstone (Daaron), Elizabeth Faulk (Grant), and Thomas Ponder; three great-grandchildren, Henry Vanstone, Laura Faulk and Will Faulk; numerous nieces and nephews.
