ABBEVILLE. . .Mary Parker Herring, a resident of Abbeville, died Wednesday morning, November 30, 2016, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. Born on March 24, 1918, she was 98 years old.


            Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 3, 2016, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Elder Ross Plowden officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery (Old Section). The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the mortuary.


            Memorial contributions may be made to the New Prospect Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Elder Ross Plowden, 515 Coleman Road, Ft. Gaines, GA 39851.


            Mrs. Herring was born and reared in Henry County, daughter of the late John Parker and Roxie Culpepper Parker. She lived in the Brown’s Crossroads community all her adult lifetime. She was formerly employed by WestPoint Stevens and later by Chancey-Herring Publishers in Headland. Mrs. Herring was a member of the New Prospect Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hamilton (Hamp) Herring, an infant son, John Wesley Herring, three sisters, Erie Davis, Minnie Ethridge and Betty Ethridge, and four brothers, Rayford Parker, Tommy Parker, Green Parker and Wesley Parker.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Judy Herring Saunders (Jerry), Huntsville; and Martha Herring Espy (Bobby Joe), Abbeville; a son, James B. (Jim) Herring (Clare), Huntsville; a brother, Larry Parker (Janice), Douglasville, GA; four grandchildren, Jackie Saunders Walter (Kevin), James Christopher Herring (Susie), Robert Craig Espy (Amber), and Katie Espy Dalton (Rodney); eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Chris Herring, Craig Espy, Michael Bryant, J. D. Ethridge, Rodney Dalton and Kevin Walter.
