McGartha Nelson, a resident of Dothan, passed away, Monday, February 4, 2019, at her residence. She was 94.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Stacy Stafford, Dr. Jerry Grandstaff and Rev. Billy Rich officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing. The family will receive friends 12:45 pm until 1:45 pm prior to service at the church. Flowers are being accepted.


Mrs. Nelson was born July 29, 1924, in Henry County to the late Harmon D. and Daisy Douglas and grew up in the Camp Springs Community. She later moved to Dothan where she resided the remainder of her life. She owned and operated Nelson’s Beauty Shop for 60 years and was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church.


In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nelson is predeceased by her husband, Clermon W. Nelson; three sons, Bo Nelson, Coach Charles Nelson and Colonel Francis Nelson; a brother, Dewey Douglas and a sister, Genelle Joiner.


She is survived by two sons, Douglas Nelson (Beverly) of Montgomery and Thomas Nelson (Tina), of Dothan; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Nelson and Jane Nelson, both of Dothan; a sister, Eloise Spivey of Dothan; a sister -in-law, Ruth Douglas; ten grandchildren, Rebecca Nelson, Jay Nelson, Joey Nelson, Jamie Nelson, Jill Nelson, Brandi Goss, Tracy Nelson, Terry Joe Nelson and Chris Nelson, Kara Youngblood; eighteen great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.


Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
