Merlene Helms Odom of Samson, AL received her heavenly healing peacefully at home Thursday, February 14, 2019.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at New Prospect Baptist Church with Rev. Elbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Merlene was born January 12, 1937 to Reesa F. and Vera Wilson Helms in Geneva County, AL. She lived her early life in the Marl Community and attended school in Samson, Geneva, and Montgomery. In 1952, at the age of 15, she met the love of her life, Tommy Yalton Odom. They were married August 7, 1954 and later had three children, Teresa, Terry, and Tony.

She was a loving wife to her husband for 64 years and to her children. She devoted her life to her family. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Merlene loved her church family and singing in the choir. Her sister, Foy was a constant companion and closest friend. In her spare time she enjoyed watching her hummingbirds and playing Yahtzee. She will forever be missed by all who loved her.

Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by her parents, Reesa F. Helms and Vera Wilson Helms Wise; one brother, Roy Helms; one brother-in-law, Gordon Spear; and son-in-law, Harold Little.

Survivors include her husband, Tommy Y. Odom; three children, Teresa Little of Westville, FL and her children, Sherri King (Scott), Sharla Grantham (Buckie), Shannon Yarbrough (Jeremy), and Shanae Little; Terry Odom (Donna) of Dothan, AL and their children, Weston Odom, Ashlyn Skipper (Wesley), and Kristy Odom; Tony Odom of Dothan, AL and his children, Rebecca Green (Chris), and Matt Odom (Tracy); one sister, Foy Spear of Samson, AL; 14 great-grandchildren, Jamey and Josh King, Buckie, Jr. and Sidney Grantham, Colton and Alissa Yarbrough, Caleigh, Abbie, Ruthie, and Judson Green, and Jace, Brant, Ty, and Rhett Odom; several extended family members and friends.
