Mr. James Howard Lewis, age 90, a lifelong resident of Cottonwood, died Wednesday September 13, 2017 at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Cottonwood United Methodist Church with Reverend Stan Sullivan officiating.   Burial will follow in the Cottonwood City Cemetery with Glover Funeral Home directing.

The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the Cottonwood United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to the Cottonwood United Methodist Church, PO Box 338, Cottonwood, AL, 36320.

Mr. Lewis was born on November 26, 1926 in Dothan the son of William Marvin and Laura Etoyle White Lewis.  Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Cottonwood High School and attended Auburn University for one year before joining the U. S. Navy where he served during World War II.  He helped organize and coach the Dixie Youth Little League in Cottonwood.  He was a member of the Alabama Cattleman’s Association, a past member of the Houston County Personnel Board and was past council member and mayor of the City of Cottonwood.  Mr. Lewis was retired from farming and was a lifelong member of the Cottonwood United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lenora Sallas Lewis and two brothers, Alton and Willie Lewis.

Survivors include: daughter, Margaret Lewis Sullivan (Stan), Cottonwood; son,  Jimmy Lewis (Robin), Dothan; son, Johnny Lewis (Tiffany), Cottonwood; brother -in-law, Billy Joe Sallas, Dothan; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Waggoner, Anna (Ben) Barron, John David (Hannah) Lewis, Jamie Lewis, Madison Martin, 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
