James Ray Mendheim died peacefully at his home on Lake Eufaula Thursday morning, July 13, 2017. He was 75. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive visitors for one hour prior to the memorial service.



 



Ray was born on April 22, 1942, in Houston County, to Mr. Otis Mendheim and Mrs. Annie Lou Mendheim. After graduating from Dothan High School in 1960, he went on to play football at Georgia Tech, where he earned a degree in Industrial Management. He then signed with the Buffalo Bills to play professional football, but had to retire due to a recurrent injury. Over the next twenty five years, Ray worked for General Motors until his retirement in the early 1990s. He then moved to Abbeville, AL to enjoy life on the lake, fishing with his friends and family, spending time with his grandsons, Cameron and Caleb, and coaching football with his brother, Ronnie. Ray was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.



 



Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronnie Mendheim. Survivors include his daughters, Kristi Mendheim and Elizabeth Thompson (Kevin) of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons, Cameron and Caleb, his sisters, June Carter of Kingsport, TN and Cecelia Godwin (Duane) of Dothan, AL, sister-in-law, Shea Mendheim of Dothan, AL and many beloved nieces and nephews.
