Obituary: Mr. Joseph M. Allgood

Mr. Joseph M. Allgood of the Bay Springs Community went home to be with the LORD Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Flowers Hospital.  He was 82.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Bay Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Cox  and Rev. Jerry Glover officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.  Interment will follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. until service time.

Flowers will be accepted or you may honor Mr. Allgood’s memory with your contribution to the Bay Springs Fire Department or the Wicksburg Fire and Rescue.

Mr. Allgood was born November 13, 1935 in Dale County to the late Melton and Emma Beasley Allgood. Joseph graduated from Wicksburg High School in 1954. He married Martha Dawn Bond in 1955 and moved to the Bay Springs Community, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was engaged in farming for his entire life, and was also employed by Powell Produce for twelve years. He served his country honorably in the Air National Guard for many years and  faithfully attended Bay Springs Baptist Church and Winslette Chapel. In addition to attending the bluegrass gospel sings he loved, he enjoyed game nights at Bay Springs Church and dominoes at home with special friends Jimmy and Janice Jones. He was an avid gardener and a man of the soil, never happier than when his hands were in the dirt of his renowned garden that produced the best tomatoes in the county or busy tending his beloved cattle. Known for his unassuming nature, his generosity, and his dry wit, he had the talent for telling a good story and for making people laugh.

In addition to his parents, one brother, Cullen Allgood; father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Bond; and a nephew, Jeffrey Allgood all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of  62 years, Martha Bond Allgood; his daughter, Allyson Wright; grandson, Cameron Wright (Ashley); brother Jimmy Allgood (Sara); sisters-in-law: Charlotte Hanners (Ralph) and Marilyn Cobb; nieces: Laurie Parker, LaJuana Green (Fred), Tara Hubbard and Meredith Seymour (Blake); nephew, Glenn Cobb (Cheryl); and other extended family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Billy Kibler, Fred Green, Blake Seymour, Shaun Carpenter, Bryan Carpenter, Glenn Cobb and Chris Jones. Honorary pallbearers are the Wicksburg High School Class of 1954.
