Marion Don Messer of the Friendship community died peacefully at home on May 18, 2017.  He was 82.

Funeral services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, State Highway 27, Geneva, Alabama, at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 with the Reverend Reggie McAllister officiating.  Friends and family may visit in the Church sanctuary one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be held in the Friendship Community Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva directing.

Don was born in Geneva County on August 10, 1934 to the late William Otis and Elizabeth Deshazo Messer.  He is predeceased by a sister, Joann Smith and by a brother, Franklin Otis Messer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred F. Messer, two sons, Keith L Messer of Beaverton, Oregon and Garth E. Messer (Candy) of Torrance, California, two grandchildren, Rebecca M. Meehan (Kerry) and Matthew M. Messer, and two brothers, Roy A. Messer (Mary) of Geneva, Alabama and Bobby R. Messer (Marie) of Abbeville, Alabama, one brother-in-law, Donnell Smith, Geneva, Alabama, as well as by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Having served our country in the U.S. Army during the Cold War era, Don subsequently enjoyed a long, satisfying career with the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronics engineer helping to ensure the safety of the flying public.  He enjoyed all forms of transportation, including scuba diving and sailing, but he was passionately fond of flying.

Don loved working with all types of machinery, and he passed on his enthusiasm to both his sons.  In retirement, he retained a lively interest in politics and current events, and was an entertaining conversationalist.  He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
