Robert E. Crowder of Taylor passed away Friday, January 27, 2017. He was 67.


Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church with Reverend Lydia Temonia officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday, January 29, 2017. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to SARCOA.


Robert was born April 20, 1949 to the late Linwood Crowder and Sarah Armstrong. He was a graduate of Dothan High School and a 1971 graduate of Auburn University 1971. He was the past mayor of Taylor and was elected Chairman of the Houston County Commissioners in 1986 and served as Chairman until 1997 when he was appointed the Executive Director for the Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging. He served as Executive Director until his retirement. He was a current Board Member/Treasurer of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A); serving on the Finance Committee, Executive Committee, Leadership Committee, and Corporate Relations and Marketing Committee. He was a Board Member –Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging (SE4A), Board Member of the Alabama Gerontological Society (AGS), National Peanut Festival Board of Directors and a member of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce.


Robert has served as President of the Alabama Association of Area Agencies on Aging (A4A), President of the Alabama Gerontological Society (AGS), President of Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA), Chairman 1994 Wiregrass United Way Board of Directors, Chairman of Houston County Spirit of Service, Chairman of Troy State University-Dothan-Advisory Board, TSUD Man of the Year and Foundation Board Member at Wallace Community College. He created the Houston County Spirit of Service Program, instrumental in the creation of the Alabama Association of Area Agencies on Aging (A4A), served on the Governor’s Long-Term Care Task Force, and instrumental in the creation of the Alabama Senior Promise Program.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Patsy Slaughter, and Cindi Crowder.


Survivors include his wife, Xylorose Crowder; his sons, Eric (Patti) Crowder and Ritchie (Shanon) Crowder; and his grandchildren, Clark Crowder, Ellie Grace Crowder, and Collin Crowder.


Serving as pallbearers will be Billy Snell, Robbins Carothers, Merritt Carothers, Rex Clark, Randy Clark, and Danny Turvin.


Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the National Peanut Festival Board.
