Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Stinson, 87, a long-time resident of Geneva, passed away at her home on Friday evening, March 10th, after an extended illness.   She was born March 9th, 1930 at the McGowan house in Eunola, Al to Porter Buren and Grace T. Barnes and grew up in the Lytle community.

Mrs. Stinson was a 1948 graduate of Samson High School.  During a 50th class reunion, she revealed to her classmates that she may, or may not, had been a former Miss America.  She began her working life at the age of 14 while standing on a drink crate to wash hair at Katrina’s Beauty Shop in Samson.  After an internship there and extensive self-study, she passed her exams and became a licensed cosmetologist.  For a short time she lived in the Clermont, Fl area where she operated her own shop.  While in Florida, she did part time modeling work for Bob Brooks Clothier.   This was where she developed her knack for dressing well to accentuate her height as well as an appreciation of clothing style and design.  After the death of her first husband, she returned to Geneva where she met and eventually married Lloyd Stinson.   Together, Lloyd and Miss Ann owned and operated Stinson’s Grocery for over 45 years during which time many valued and loyal customers became dear and cherished friends.  Mrs. Stinson served on the Geneva Festival on the Rivers committee since its inception as well as on the Geneva Senior Citizens advisory board.  She was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church for many years as well as Loyalty Chapter #438, Order of the Eastern Star, in Geneva.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Geneva, with the Rev. Bob Cox, Jay Howell and Stephen Crews officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing.  Visitation will be Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in her name or the Geneva Senior Citizen Center.  Mrs. Stinson’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilmer “Cat” Crews, Sr., three sisters Bertha Lee Mauldin, Sarah Poteat and Glenda Faye Barnes.  Two brothers, Bruce Barnes, Sr., and Jesse Lamar Barnes.  A grandson, William Trenton McLeod and a daughter in law, Mary “Cookie” Crews.
