Mrs. Grace Blackman Griffin, age 92, of Ariton, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Willson Hospice House in Albany, Georgia.


Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016 in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home, Ozark, with Rev. Jim Cordes and Rev. Joe Underwood officiating. Burial will follow at Center Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Ariton under the direction of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time from 2-3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.


Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.


Mrs. Griffin was born December 22, 1923 in Dale County, Alabama to the late Shelby C. Blackman and Willie Segler Blackman. She graduated from Ariton High School and after graduation attended business school in Montgomery, Alabama. She lived in Birmingham, Montgomery and Samson before returning to Ariton in 1967. She held various jobs including bank teller, payroll clerk and store clerk. Mrs. Griffin owned and operated Griffin Gas and Grocery near Ariton with her husband, Max, until they both retired. She was happiest being homemaker and was at her best when caring for her family.


Mrs. Griffin enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, sewing, and cooking, especially baking. Her red velvet cakes and pecan pies were family favorites. She liked watching wildlife especially  cardinals. She loved to read her Bible and Christian literature. Grace was a member of Center Ridge Baptist Church.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Max L. Griffin; two brothers, Grady Blackman and Owyer Blackman; two sisters, Lucille Blackman DiBattista and Mary Ruth Blackman Boutwell; and one nephew, Ronald Boutwell.


Survivors include her daughter, Jane Griffin Williams (Claud) of Albany, GA; step-daughter, Polly Griffin Graham (Rayvon) of Brundidge, AL; two step-grandsons, Brandon Graham of Birmingham, AL and Shadron Graham of Brundidge, AL; nieces, Theresa Blackman Jernigan (Bob) of Ariton, AL, Judy Blackman Johnston of Brundidge, AL and Janet Blackman Breland of Mobile, AL. Several great- nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces also survive.


Serving as active pallbearers are Jeff Johnston, Shanon Jernigan, Clay Jernigan, Jared Johnston, Bob Jernigan and Johnny Brogdon. Honorary pallbearers are Claud Williams, Rayvon Graham and Bob Pflug.
