Joretta Eagerton Thomas passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 after an extended illness. She was 78.


 


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Reverend Ray Jones, her sons, Randy Thomas and Jeff Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gideon’s International, Dothan North Camp, P.O. Box 5554, Dothan, AL 36302 or to Ridgecrest Baptist Church Music Ministry, 1231 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36301.


 


The baby of 11 children, Mrs. Thomas was born April 10, 1938 in New Hope, AL (Coffee County), to the late Clarence and Ruby Dismukes Eagerton and lived the early part of her life there. She was Valedictorian of her class when graduating from New Hope Junior High School. She went on to graduate from New Brockton High School. She also attended Howard College (Samford University) where she was a member of the prestigious a cappella choir. She returned home to marry the love of her life, Spurgeon “Spud” Thomas on May 17, 1959. She was employed with Bayline Railroad at the time of marrying. She was a legal secretary, church & financial secretary, and eventually retired with Dothan City Schools. She loved singing in the choir at churches she attended throughout her years of serving the Lord. Mrs. Thomas loved playing the piano, playing cards, traveling, spending time with her family and cooking family recipes for everyone to enjoy.


 


In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her three sisters, Ruth Cranford, Julia Moss, and Mildred Gulledge and five brothers, Franklin Eagerton, David Eagerton, Jim Eagerton, Alvie Eagerton, and Raif Eagerton; her mother-in-law, Irene Etheridge Thomas and her father-in-law, Spurgeon Ezell Thomas, Sr.


 


Surviving relatives include her husband, Spurgeon “Spud” Thomas; one daughter, Pam (Jackie) Wimbish, Dothan; three sons, Randy (Tracy) Thomas, Madison; Jeff (Bobbie) Thomas, Madison; Brent (Robin) Thomas, Vancouver, Canada; ten grandchildren, Jaclyn (David) Jones, Bryan (Christa) Wimbish, Wyndi (Billy) Clark, Shane (Kate) Thomas, Krista Thomas, Haley Thomas, Jeremiah Thomas, Anna Thomas, Isabella Thomas, and Lili-Kate Thomas; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Jean) Eagerton and Jesse Eagerton; and several nieces and nephews.


 


Serving as active pallbearers will be Shane Thomas, Bryan Wimbish, Jeremiah Thomas, Jackie Wimbish, David Jones, and Billy Clark.


 


The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to everyone for the loving care and kindness shown during Joretta’s illness.
