Mrs. Mary Charles Ward, 81, of Hartford, AL died on Saturday, March 3, 2018, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral services will be 11 am, Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the Hartford Baptist Church with Rev. Ben McFather and Rev. Bruce Spivey officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hartford City cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing.  The visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Wednesday at the church.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302 or to the Hartford Baptist Church Prayer Garden, 105 East Burch Street, Hartford, AL 36344.  


Mary Charles was a devout Christian and very involved in many areas of the church.  She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and worked with the bus ministry and children’s ministry as long as she was able.  She was a loving wife of 63 years to her husband, David.  To their marriage, she nurtured, raised and loved her three children, Mary Lyn, Cindy and Rob.  She retired from the Farmer’s Home Administration after 39 years of service.  


Mary Charles was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Reese Durant and Theda Woodham Durant, as well as her younger sister, Nina Ruth Letourneau.  


Survivors include her husband, David C. Ward, Hartford, AL; daughters, Mary Lyn Woolley (Tom), Alabaster, AL, Cindy Cohen (Ron), Thornton, CO; son, Rob Ward, Enterprise, AL; sister, Laura Jean Butscher, Brunswick, OH; grandchildren, Drew and McKenzie Woolley, Rita and Megan Cohen, Kendall and Kameron Ward.    


The family would like to extend a sincere Thank You to DaySpring Hospice, the nurses Cynthia Curenton, Tonya Rodgers and aide Cherita Hayes; and also mom’s caregiver, Debra Wesley.
