Mrs. Mattie Barfield Howell, age 92, a resident of Dothan, died Thursday, November 22, 2018 at the home of her daughter following an extended illness.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the Glover Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Billy Rich and Chaplain Kathy Stumbaugh officiating.  Burial will follow in the Memory Hill Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing.


The family will be receiving friends from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Saturday prior to services at Glover Funeral Home.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Southside Baptist Church Media Library, 423 E. Cottonwood Rd., Dothan, AL, 36301.


Mrs. Howell was born on January 4, 1926, the daughter of Christian and Bertha Efurd Barfield.  She was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church where she served many years as a Sunday School teacher, GA teacher, children’s sword drill teacher, and a director of the Southside Media Library.  She was a member of “The Women of Faith” Sunday School Class.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Chalker Howell, and devoted son, Mark Howell; 5 brothers, A.J., Quinn, Shelley, Robert, and Leon Barfield; 2 sisters, Nettie Hoefer, and her loving twin sister, Hattie Branton.


Survivors include her daughter, Adelia (Andy), Dothan; granddaughter, Hannah Burke, Mobile, AL.; several nieces & nephews; several lifetime friends, Mildred Nall, Betty Strickland, Francis Bailey, and Nancy Hornsby.


Active pallbearers will be: Stephen Kelley, Donnie Crawford, Hal Barnes, Shane Sellers, Beau Sellers and Joey Floyd.


Honorary pallbearers will be: “The Women of Faith” Sunday School Class from Southside Baptist Church.


The family expresses thanks and appreciation for everyone’s kindness and compassion.  Special Thanks to Southern Care Hospice, Kay Risner,  Kathy Stumbaugh and Vanita Newman.
