SHORTERVILLE…Reverend Robert Hyde Wellner, Sr., age 77, died Friday, February 10, 2017 in his home in Shorterville, Alabama.


            The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, February 13, 2017 at Holman-Abbeville Mortuary. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

            Reverend Wellner, son of the late William Clarence Wellner, Sr. and Charlotte Bissicks Wellner, was born on March 27, 1939. He attended Red Bank High School in Red Bank, NJ and went on to serve in the Air Force Band, stationed at Mitchell Air Base, Hempstead, Long Island and Yamato Air Station in Japan. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he worked with the U.S. Post Office in Little Silver, NJ, served as a police officer for Rumson, NJ and a volunteer fireman. He served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, Red Bank, NJ and as Music Director at Victory Baptist Church, Lake Worth, FL.


After being called into the ministry of his Lord, Jesus Christ, Robert graduated from Baptist Bible Institute (now Florida Baptist College) in Graceville, FL with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies in 1980. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree of Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1988.


Reverend Wellner served as Pastor of Bonifay Baptist Church, Bonifay, FL(1979-1981); Shorterville Baptist Church, Shorterville, AL (1981-1985); New Hope Baptist Church, Franklin, LA (1986-1988); Friendship Baptist Church, Brimfield, MA (1988-2009); Interim Pastor of Faith Baptist Church, Mendon, MA (2010-2012); and Hospice Chaplain for Quaboag Rehab/Nursing Home, West Brookfield, MA (2008-2011).


Reverend Wellner worked bi-vocationally most of his life as a carpenter. He volunteered with Carpenters for Christ, SBC Disaster Relief, served in multiple positions with the Massachusetts Baptist Association and the Baptist Convention of New England, participated in several mission teams both here and abroad. After his diagnosis of cancer, he volunteered locally with Judson Baptist Association’s food banks and their thrift stores, as well as the area nursing homes.


Reverend Wellner, “Brother Bob”, was known for his infectious enthusiasm and encouragement of others in their life journey. He had a wonderful sense of humor, love for children, and gracious acceptance of people from all walks of life. His desire that all would know his Savior and Lord motivated him to share the Good News of Jesus and God’s forgiveness and love. His passion was preaching God’s Word, singing the great hymns of the faith and lifting our hearts as he prayed to his ‘Dad’. He was privileged to baptize hundreds and influence many more for the Kingdom. He will be greatly missed in this life. To God be the Glory!


Surviving relatives include his wife of forty-two years, Susan Wilbert Wellner, five of six siblings, Lillian Hryshkanych, Waynesboro, VA; Ann Schachter, Dahlonega, GA; William Wellner, Hiawassee, AR; Audrey Giselson (Deceased), Lawrence Wellner, Miamisburg, OH and Patricia Taylor, Rexford, MT; seven children, David John Wellner (Pam), Oceanport, NJ; Robert H. Wellner, Jr., Highlands, NJ; Debra Lee Varley (Tim), Ponte Vedra, FL; Mark T. Wellner, Atlantic Highlands, NJ; Debra Elaine Phillips (Tim), Shorterville, AL; Donna Jean Richards (Eddie), Greensboro, NC and Heidi Flagg (Allen), Agawam, MA; eleven grandchildren, Heather Phillips Roberts, Megan Phillips Jackson, Jaclyn Wellner, Dylan Wellner, Ashleigh Phillips Tate, Hayley Wellner, Paige Wellner, Zach Wellner, Ben Wellner, Austin Flagg and Mattie Flagg; five great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Roberts, Timothy Logan Jackson, Dillon Jackson, Anna Claire Roberts, and Harper Leigh Tate; multiple nieces and nephews.
