ABBEVILLE. . .Sam Wesley Calhoun, a resident of Abbeville, died Friday morning, May 19, 2017, at his home. He was 79.


            Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, May 21, 2017, in the County Line Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Bridgman Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M. Sunday in the church.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the County Line Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Carolyn Jones, 163 Pleasant Hill Road, Eufaula, AL 36027.


            Mr. Calhoun was born and reared in Henry County, son of the late Jack Owens Calhoun and Olga Agnes Parrish Calhoun. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School and received a certificate in Drafting from Sparks State Technical College in Eufaula. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force. Mr. Calhoun was an active member of the County Line Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was self-employed as a contractor in residential construction and painting and was also engaged in farming most of his adult lifetime.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty Campbell Calhoun; two daughters, Sandra C. Lawrence (Mallory), Decatur, GA; and Cecelia C. Suggs, Webb, AL; two sons, Michael Calhoun, Abbeville; and Russell Calhoun, Locust Grove, GA; a sister, Ann Bedsole, Abbeville; eight grandchildren, Jenna Calhoun, Travis Calhoun (Savannah), Dylan Suggs, Parrish Lawrence, Brittany Lawrence, Cody Suggs, Zachary Lawrence and Callie Suggs; two great-grandchildren, Hadley Barnes and Bentley Calhoun; a sister-in-law, Annice Hudspeth and her husband, Billy John, Abbeville.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Travis Calhoun, Dylan Suggs, Cody Suggs, Zachary Lawrence, David White and Jimmy Jones.
