ABBEVILLE. . .Sarah Murphy “Sissy” Messick, a resident of Abbeville, died Sunday morning, June 25, 2017, at her home. She was 85.

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with her nephews, Darden Kirby and Brendt Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the mortuary.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to Covenant Care, 1512 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.

            Mrs. Messick was born and reared in the Murphy Station Community of Henry County, daughter of the late Clarence Malcolm Murphy, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Roberts Murphy. She was a 1950 graduate of Abbeville High School and received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Auburn University. She furthered her education by studying at the University of Tennessee. Mrs. Messick retired from the Abbeville Christian Academy as a second grade elementary teacher after twenty-seven years employment. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she formerly taught the children. Mrs. Messick enjoyed traveling and toured all fifty states and several foreign countries. She dearly loved her cats and dogs. Mrs. Messick was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Murphy Kirby and her husband, Bob Kirby.

            Surviving relatives include her husband of sixty years, Richard Douglas Messick; a daughter, Sarah Messick “Dee Dee” Champion (J.P.), all of Abbeville; two grandchildren, Rusty Champion (Sarah), and Parker Champion (Abby); two brothers, George Murphy (Jane), and Mack Murphy (Jane), all of Abbeville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Messick family, Wiley and Betty Messick, Lucy and George Heller, O’Neal and Mary Hazel Messick, and Jane and Mack Murphy; a special cousin, Becky Taylor; several nieces and nephews.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be Alan Capps, Mack Capps, Michael Murphy, Chase Murphy, Justin Murphy, Josh Murphy and Harrison Barnes.
