Thelma Wexler Nomberg, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018.  She was 84.  Funeral services will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 188 N. Park Ave., at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rabbi Lynne Goldsmith officiating.  The family will receive visitors from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Temple social hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Emanu-El.


 


Mrs. Nomberg was born on July 10, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY.  Her father’s business moved them from New York to Saluda, SC, Scottsboro, AL, Chattanooga, TN and finally to Ozark, AL.  Upon moving to Ozark, at the young age of 14 she was crowned Miss Ozark.  After graduating from high school, she was accepted to Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.  However, she was introduced to a family friend, Bill Nomberg, prior to leaving for school.  They fell in love and were married on August 20, 1950.  They were married for 55 years until Bill passed away in 2005.


 


Mrs. Nomberg was very involved in the Dothan community for many years.  She volunteered at the Wiregrass Mental Health Center conducting occupational therapy and arts and crafts clinics.  She served as President of the Houston County Arts and Humanities Council and Vice-President of the Dothan Civic Center.  She served on the Board of the Houston County Library and was a founding member of The Biracial Study Club.  She was an active member of Temple Emanu-El, taught religious school, served as sisterhood president as well as numerous terms on the Board of Directors.  Additionally, she served on the managing committee of the Blumberg Family Jewish Community Services.


 


Her love of the written word made her an avid reader, a published lyricist, and a talented writer.  Her artistic side included painting and sculpting.


 


Thelma and her husband, Bill, owned Wex-Tex Industries, Knothe Corporation in New York, NY., and The Treasure Ship and Treasure Island Marina in Panama City Beach, FL.  Mrs. Nomberg was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Pearl Wexler, her husband, William Nomberg, her brother, Sam Wexler, and great-grandson, Joseph Harrison Sikora, Jr.  She is survived by her sons, Marc Nomberg of Gulfport, FL., Robert Nomberg of Panama City Beach, FL., her daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Nomberg Todd and James C. Todd, Jr. of Panama City Beach, FL., and Anna Nomberg Schmidtke and Dr. Craig Schmidtke of Dothan, AL., five grandchildren, Elizabeth Nomberg, Rachel Nomberg Oziel (Matt), Joseph Sikora (Sophie), Jordan Sikora, and Sommers Schmidtke, and two great-grandchildren, Maisie and Sadie Sikora, as well as many nieces and nephews.


 


Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Ricky Bern, Mr. David Schaler, Mr. Page Todd, and Mr. David Johnston.
