Thomas Benjamin Culbreth


Thomas Benjamin Culbreth passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 peacefully at his home. He was 78.


Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Columbia, AL with Reverend Don Tew, Reverend James Culbreth, and Reverend Duncan Mischler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, prior to service time at the church.


Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.


Mr. Culbreth was born June 10, 1937 in Columbia, Alabama. He graduated from Houston County High School and Auburn University with a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting. After college, Mr. Culbreth began his career in 1959 with Independent Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville, FL as a Systems Programmer. In 1969, he was promoted to Assistant Vice President and in 1971, Assistant Director of Data Processing/Systems. In 1980, he became the Vice President/Director of Information Systems with Independent Fire Insurance Company. He left the active work environment in 1993 due to disabilities and later retired in 2002.


Mr. Culbreth was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL for 50 years and was a current member of Bradfordville First Baptist Church in Tallahassee, FL. He was president of the Data Processing Management Association and a member of Civitan, both of Jacksonville. He was known as an avid fan of Auburn University football.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Edward M. and Ollie Mae Webb Culbreth; brothers, Edward M. Culbreth, Jr., Bunyon W. Culbreth, John French Culbreth, and James Olaff Culbreth; and sisters, Frances Culbreth Odom and Betty Louise Culbreth.


Survivors include his wife, Virginia Coon Culbreth of Tallahassee, FL; son, Tommy Culbreth (Sandy) of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Paula Mischler (Duncan) of Tallahassee, FL; grandsons, Ben and Jackson Culbreth of Jacksonville, FL and Taylor and Justin Mischler of Tallahassee, FL; brothers, Rudy Culbreth of Dothan, AL, Frank Culbreth (Jenny) of Dothan, AL and Gerald Culbreth (Linda) of Tallahassee, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
