ABBEVILLE. . .Thomas Gene Starling, a resident of Abbeville, entered into his heavenly home, Saturday night, December 2, 2017, at his home. He was 85.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 5, 2017, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ryan Johnson and Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church Family Life Building.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church “Building Maintenance Fund”, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310.


            Mr. Starling was born in Henry County, son of the late Andrew Ephraim Starling and Vara Buxton Starling. He moved to Wewahitchka, Florida,  with his family as a child. Mr. Starling was a graduate of Wewahitchka High School where he played center on the 1949 state runner up championship basketball team. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War era as a flight line instrument mechanic. After serving in the military, Mr. Starling worked for Hayes International and at Tyndall Air Force Base before returning to Abbeville. For many years he was the owner and operator of Starling Electric & Plumbing in Abbeville. In later years he was employed by the Henry County Board of Education and established a plumbing and electrical program that was named the best in the state. Mr. Starling formerly served two terms as a councilman for the City of Abbeville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Starling was an avid fisherman, a beekeeper and enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by a sister, Annette Starling Duke, a brother, Charlie V. Starling and  brothers-in-law, Jesse T. Harpe and Tommy Duke.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Elizabeth Harpe Starling; a daughter, Cindy Starling Phillips (Sam), Abbeville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Hayes (Joshua), Samuel Phillips and Caroline Rainey (Billy); sisters-in-law, Jean Starling, and Joan Harpe; several nieces, a nephew, and cousins.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Samuel Phillips, Joshua Hayes, Billy Rainey, Bruce Starling, Joe Money and Chris Money.
