Walter "Bruiser" Pilcher

"Hey, I’ve got something to tell you...."

　

Walter Wright (Bruiser) Pilcher, age 72, of New Brockton AL, passed peacefully in his home, Thursday April 11, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

　

Bruiser was born to Walter and Robbie Louis Pilcher on December 12, 1946. When Walt Sr. saw his chunky baby boy, he said, "He looks like a little bruiser" and the nickname stuck. The name served him well in many respects, most notably as a deterrent to boys who may have wanted to date his daughters.

　

Bruiser was married to his best friend, Alice Goodyear Pilcher, for 47 joyful years. They were inseparable in life as well as work, owning Pilcher Painting and Wallcovering. Bruiser and Alice had three daughters and gained three wonderful sons-in-law: Madilynn Nelson (John) of New Orleans, LA; Kim Collins (Sean) of Enterprise, AL and Nicki Pender (Philip) of Cropwell, AL.

　

Bruiser was the middle child between Lyndale Dale Hundley of Eufaula, Al., was proceeded in death by his younger sister, Paula Pilcher of Enterprise.

　

He loved to say that Alice was the one who proposed, and how his daughters got their good looks from him.

　

Bruiser was also proud of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved telling you all about what they were doing in life.

　

A Master Painter for over 50 years, Bruiser took great pride in his work, a skill he learned from his father at the young age of 12. There’s no telling how many miles his hands painted over the years. He could paint all day without getting a drop on his clean, pressed painter’s whites. He worked hard, but he played hard, too, enjoying the outdoors while gardening, fishing, hunting, and did all very well aided by a big chew of tobacco and a cold beer. Being the outdoorsman that he was Bruiser is now in the only gated community he would ever want to be in with his heavenly Father, hopefully where he couldn’t see the gates. He loved to make people laugh and feel welcomed; always quick with a joke or prank. We will miss getting the phone calls from him where he’d already be laughing before the conversation started, and you’d hear him say, "Hey, I’ve got something to tell you." You’d know there was a good joke coming next. Bruiser truly was a legend in his own time.

　

Bruiser has asked to forego visitation and funeral services, since he believed that the time for visiting was while people were still alive. In that respect, he had thousands of visitors in his lifetime, including hundreds in the final days of his life. He also requested to be cremated, placing his ashes in an urn until his wife, Alice, joins him in Heaven. Their ashes will be spread together over one of their favorite fishing holes.

　

To honor his final wishes, the family asks that humorous Bruiser stories (based somewhat on the truth) be shared during this time of mourning, which he wouldn’t have wanted to last very long. As a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason of the Jubilee Lodge, he has asked that any donations be given to the Shriners hospital.
