TUMBLETON COMMUNITY…William Earl Burke, a resident of Newville, died late Wednesday night, December 7, 2016, at his home. He was 64.


            Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 9, 2016, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Don Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Friday at the mortuary. At other times, the family will be at the home of a sister, Dewana Daughtry, Highway 10, Abbeville.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36111 or to the Oakey Grove Baptist Church, c/o Winnie Murray, 1043 Columbia Road, Abbeville, Alabama 36310.


            Earl Burke was born and reared in the Oakey Grove community of Henry County, son of the late Lafayette Burke and Pauline Tice Burke. He lived near the Tumbleton community since 1982. Earl was a member of the Oakey Grove Baptist Church. He attended Wallace Community college. Mr. Burke was retired from Flowers Hospital as a Paramedic and was formerly employed by the City of Headland as a Paramedic. In earlier years, Earl worked for the Henry County Road & Bridge Department. He formerly served as coach of youth baseball teams in Headland. Earl was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Burke and Don Burke.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Gwen Bostick Burke; a daughter, Andrea Burke Smith (Ashley), Shorterville; a son, Clint Burke, Newville; a sister, Dewana Burke Daughtry (Garland), Abbeville; a brother, Elton Burke (Jennifer), Dothan; two grandchildren, Brandon Smith and Paul Smith; an aunt, Mary Nell Arnold; sisters-in-law, Helen Burke Ryals, Roberta Bostick Edmondson (John), and Mary Bostick Peterman; several nieces and nephews.
