Fear at Abbeville High School

My children go to Abbeville High School and it absolutely broke my heart to see the fear in their faces when I told them this morning they had to go back to school. I never realized how bad gangs were in town until this past weekend when a 17 year old boy was stabbed to death at his own party, and then to hear students were bringing guns and knives to school the following Monday. My children who I have vowed to protect , are terrified to go to school and don't want to go to A.H.S. anymore. That makes it even harder because there is no other options for them. Not unlike many other families in Abbeville, we cannot afford the $9000 a year to send our 3 teenagers to A.C.A. and can't afford the gas to drive them to Headland everyday, and on top of that, to hear Barbour County is going to be shutting down their high school and rerouting them to Abbeville is going to make matters worse because gangs are just as bad if not worse there, and that's going to bring more violence our way.

I live in Henry County and have observed many situations of bullying, fights, and many situations not reported or covered. However, there are many decent staff members and many decent law enforcement doing their best to protect, serve and teach and/or guide daily. You "DO" have options. HOMESCHOOL! If you are not satisfied with complaints then contact your Senators, Governor and media involved with names of those involved. HOMESCHOOL is an option and its more affordable than you think! Additionally, it does NOT require you to be home at their HS age. Additionally, if they are NOT doing the work---send back to school. Simple and rectified!
I am so proud to have teachers like you teaching my children. Its not everyday you find a teacher who enjoys her job enough to stay for 25 years. That being said, my children DO play sports, I DO attend parent teacher meetings, I am VERY involved in my children's education so when I hear from my CHILD that so and so brought a gun to school intend to worry and I have it on good authority (coach Dale) that pocket knives were indeed found at school I don't know about you but that certainly sounds like a weapon to me.
I am a PROUD teacher at ABBEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL. I am a PROUD mother of two ABBEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL graduates. It makes me so mad and breaks my heart at the same time to read negative and untrue comments concerning AHS. Yes the students at AHS have seen their share of tragedies with the latest one occurring this past weekend. Yes the police were on campus Tuesday but NOT because of students making threats but because of parents calling with rumors of threats. The students were just as shocked by the police presence when they got off the buses as everyone else. Were the students searched one-by-one? YES. Were the book bags searched? YES. Were weapons found? NO, NO, NO! I wonder how many schools in the area could have this type of search done in their schools with the same results.Schools are not perfect, teachers are not perfect, children are not perfect, and parents are not perfect but by working together we can all be closer to perfect than we are when we work against each other. I will be completing 25 years of teaching in May. All 25 years have been at Abbeville High School. There has never been a day in those 25 years that I have been afraid to go to work. For those that fear Abbeville High School, how many times have you attended open house or parent-conference day, shown your support at volleyball, football, basketball, softball, and ba seball games, or just came to visit the school as a supportive parent? When tragedy happens in a community the school is always an easy target to throw blame on. It is sad when some people would like nothing more than to see Abbeville High School fail. As I stated previously we are not perfect at AHS but each day the administrators, faculty, and staff work to ensure your child attends a safe environment that promotes student learning. We are a family at AHS, we care about the school and will continue to work every day to make it the best. JACKET PRIDE!!
I hate you feel this way. I think AHS is a good school and I know for a fact that no weapons were found when they searched Tuesday. I also know that many people give their views and opinions on events and some like to create more drama. I was impressed with the way the school, administration and officers conducted themselves at school on Tuesday. Even though I don't think they had any evidence that someone would bring guns to school, they took parental concerns to heart and everyone I talked to felt safe. I know some may disagree, and that is their right, but I am proud to be apart of AHS. I always have. Everything in life is not perfect, and safety is not guarenteed anymore in any situation, but AHS is okay. We will rebound from this and be stronger. #Jacketforlife
In continuation. What are we as parents supposed to do in this situation? The thought of me tal detectors in school is a scary one but how do you approach at to the school board? Any advice would be great, because honestly I am at a loss anymore.
