AVON:       02:48 AM.   Houston County 911 dispatched Cowarts Volunteer Fire, Ashford Fire, Ashford Rescue and Ashford Police to 413 Cummings Circle in reference to a structure fire.

The structure fire from Wednesday night has ignited again.

Ashford Rescue was first on the scene and reports the fire is contained within the structure from Wednesday evening. There is a tree on fire from outside the structure and grass on fire behind the residence.

Water is an issue at this location as was the night of the original fire due to no fire hydrants.

By 02:58 AM Cowarts Volunteer Fire was on the scene. The first unit reported they could handle the fire. Both Cowarts Volunteer Fire Department Fire Engine Company and Brush truck on the scene.

OHHH, did I mention these fireman are free to the citizens. Unlike Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe and the four Houston County Commissioners, these volunteer fireman draw no salary, no health insurance benefits, no retirement systems of Alabama within 10 years of service.

You Houston County Commission Chairman and four part time Houston County Commissioners are asleep while these volunteers are out serving their community, and will have to get back up around 6:30 AM to go to work to make a living. While you spend about $ 255,852.00 plus in salaries alone for your Houston County Commission Chairman and four Houston County Commissioners, without figuring health insurance benefits, Retirement Systems of Alabama and other costs.

D1 Dr./Commissioner Curtis Harvey, with his years on the Commission, is in access of $ 41,000.00 per year as a part time County Commissioner; D3 Sergeant with the Houston County Sheriff Department/Houston County Commissioner, a part time position is in excess of $ 41,000.00 per year, then add his salary as a Houston County Sheriff Deputy Sergeant. D3 Sgt./Commissioner voted himself two of the three raises ( one of the three D3 Herring said would voted for but he was absent due to death in his family ), and he got all three raises as a Commissioner and as a Sergeant with Houston County Sheriff Department.

D2 Tracy Adams is at the base salary of $ 33,000.00 per year part time Commissioner plus $ 3,000.00 per year auto allowance making $ 36,000.00 for the part time commission: D4 Captain with Houston County Sheriff Department/Houston County Commissioner, part time is at base salary of $ 33,000.00 plus $ 3,000.00 per year auto allowance making $ 36,000.00 per year for the part time commission, then add his salary as a Captain with Houston County Sheriff Department. Both D2 Adams and D4 Ivey are in their first term.

Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba only makes $ 42,000.00 per year, no retirement benefits. When he leaves he “might” get a certificate of appreciation. Dothan Commissioners make only $ 21,000.00 per year with no retirement. After 20 plus years service as a Dothan Commissioner, Don Clements probably got a certificate of appreciation but probably had to buy his own frame. He nor any Mayor or Commissioner get any retirement benefits. Dothan Mayor and Commissioners get zero raises during their term, yet D1 Houston County Commissioner Harvey and D3 Houston County Commissioner Herring and Chairman Brandon Shoupe - as a Commissioner voted themselves raises. Herring has gotten three during his 1.5 terms as a Commissioner and voted himself the same raises as a Houston County Sheriff Deputy.
