ALABAMA - FLORIDA: Today I read the article:
United Methodist high court rules against disaffiliation by church closing, sale
The United Methodist Church’s high court ruled this week against churches who wanted to “disaffiliate” by asking their conference to shut down down their church and sell the property back to them.
Harvest Church has filed a lawsuit in Houston County Circuit Court challenging the United Methodist "high court" ruling. However, I expect that "high court" ruling of the Alabama Court system and not the United Methodist "high court" ruling will trump in the end decision.
A lot of the United Methodist churches have left the denomination because they disagreed with the denomination’s handling of human sexuality issues.
Harvest Church started by meeting at Honeysuckle Middle School. As the church grew they purchased property on Fortner Street outside the Ross Clark Circle. They have a beautiful church facility with a large congregation.
While I am not a Methodist and never studied the Methodist Church background, I am concerned over the stance the United Methodist "high court" takes, which is the property belongs to the United Methodist headquarters, whomever - wherever they are.
To me, the church belongs to those who attend and join the church. Those in the local church grow the congregation, worship together, study God's word together, share in each other's good and bad times. They give their tithes and offerings, which in turn pays the salaries of the staff, pays for the building, and programs of the church. Not some "high court" rulers, located wherever.
The church is not a Pizza Hut, Longhorn's, Belk's franchise or any other franchise store. It is a House of Worship where "sinners" meet to create relationships and learn more about God's word and His teaching's. And my uneducated reading is the United Methodist "high court" looks at it as some group somewhere other than where the local church is owns everything.
And you do not attend to church to worship a Pastor. You are to love the Pastor, but you are there to worship a true and loving God. You are to care for your Pastor and help meet his needs, but a Pastor is a sinner just like you and I. And the Pastor's role is to deliver a message based on the Bible that God has placed on his heart. But a pastor is not someone to judge someone, but there to minister to the needs of congregation.
I am not in the Methodist Church. And do not know enough about their structure. But I honestly feel the church is about the people in the church who attend and worship together, not some franchise where the home office is located elsewhere.
Harvest Church, I support your stand.
