DOTHAN: Today marked the close of the 2024 National Peanut Festival.
While Saturday night ended the local vendors and exhibits the actual fair rides were open today for people to come and ride.
With exception of being required to close Wednesday because of anticipated bad weather, this year fair attendance was up.
On Saturday night it reminded of the old days when the fair was held at the Houston County Farm Center. Publix Shopping Center was not on that property and was used for parking. And traffic was jammed and parking all along Ross Clark Circle, Cottonwood Road, Prevatt Road and anywhere someone could find to park.
On Saturday night there was a traffic jam with people attending the National Peanut Festival fair. People were parked along side Iris Road, Blackman Road and Highway 231 South. Unofficial estimates more than 40,000 people were in attendance on Saturday.
This year the National Peanut Festival Fair on Highway 231 appeared to all operate smooth. The Dothan Police Department, Houston County Sheriff Department, and DSI did an outstanding job in keeping everything safe and running smooth. Dothan's Scott Palmer and Jason Rudd manage the security and EMS along with the law enforcement and private security agency.
Dothan Fire Department and Pilcher Ambulance did a fantastic job in providing emergency medical services.
The staff and volunteers had a great show and did a terrific job in a clean facility and atmosphere for the guests to attend.
The only complaint was the parade. This year the parade date, times, route and those in the parade changed. A lot of complaints from the public about the parade. Anytime thereis change from the norm there are going to be complaints. The National Peanut Festival Board will have to evaluate those complaints and make decisions for the 2025 National Peanut Festival Parade. Some of the those complaints also included people being critical that the farmers were not featured in the parade enough, most especially with the Peanut Farmer being the feature of the National PEANUT Festival. That will be some board dicsussions and they round table this year and discussions for 2025.
Otherwise, all in all, the 2024 National Peanut Festival under the leadership of President Phillip Tidwell was a success.
