HOUSTON COUNTY -DOTHAN:     The current Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe and current members of the Houston County Commission are asking the registered voters of all of Houston County residents to raise the tax on lodging fees.


This would increase the rates on any Air-Bnb's or motel stays in all 579.88 square miles of Houston County. With the xception of Dothan National and Center Stage, all hotels are in the city limits of Dothan Alabama.


The current lodging tax is 13% according to a document issued on October 1, 2024 reflecting the "current" lodging tax collections issued by the City of Dothan.


Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe and other commissioners hve made presentations. They have discussed how the funding would go for areas across Houston County, with the City of Dothan getting the largest share.


At last month's Cottonwood Town Council, D2 Commissioner Tracy Adams corrected the way the money would be distributed. At girst the money would go to the town, and now D2 Adams said the town would present invoices and the Houston County Commission would pay the invoice. A vast difference then first proposed. D2 Adams said he and Chairman Shoupe discussed this and made the change.


ISSUE:   Nothing can be done unless in an official Houston County Commission Meeting. A motion has to be made, issue discussed, motion made for approval, a second and a majority vote cast for it to be official. The Chairman of the Houston County Commission can not make a motion, and can only vote in the vent of a tie. So a discussion between D2 Adams and Chairman Shoupe does not mean this is the way it will be.


AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM - there has been no spending proposal, long term outline, in any official Houston County Commission meeting where the spending proposal has been passed. And just because Chairman Shoupe say's it does not mean that is what is going to happen. 


WHERE IS THE CITY OF DOTHAN ON THIS ISSUE - totally silent.


The City of Dothan lodging tax collections produced October 1, 2024 reflect a $ 626,093/.94 increase over budget for Fiscal Year 2024.
