HOUSTON COUNTY:     Tonight a EMS service in the county was dispatched to a medical emergency. The call was patient not breathing and CPR was in progress.

When the EMS unit arrived they mutual aid requested Dothan Fire Department to respond. WHY? Because Dothan Fire Department has paramedics on the fire engines which are allowed to do more in life saving measures than lower level medical.

The above statement is no throw back on any EMS service, but an Advanced can not do what a Paramedic can do, and a Paramedic can not do what a flight medic can do.

Houston County Sheriff Department, all municipal law enforcement with exception of Dothan Police, all 17 Houston County Volunteer Fire Departments, all 5 EMS services in Houston County operate on a UHF digital radio system.

Dothan Police and Dothan Fire Department operate on a P25 Motorola Radio System. And there is a wall up between Dothan 911 Center and Houston County 911 Center. ( FOR THE RECORD - I voted against the wall and it needs to come down!!!).

Dothan Police Chief, who is a forward thinker, had the Dothan Radio Shop make the Dothan Police P25 Motorola radios capable of being able to turn the knob and be able to talk directly on the Houston County Sheriff UHF Digital system.

Now, I am about to talk about Rickey Stokes. You know the one cussed most of the time! When I learned what Chief Benny did, I went to the Dothan Radio Shop and asked could the Dothan Fire Radios be made to talk on the UHF Digital system to the 17 Volunteer Fire and 5 EMS units. They said YES.

Then I, Rickey Stokes, went to Dothan Police Chief Will Benny and discussed with him and got his approval. Then I, Rickey Stokes, went to Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams and discussed with him and got his approval. Then I, Rickey Stokes, went to the Houston County Volunteer Fire Association and discussed with them and these was a cost.

Once all parties agreed, S & P Communications in Opp Alabama, Dothan Radio Shop, Houston County Sheriff Sgt. Ray Arnold and Houston County Volunteer Fire President Jason Reneau made it happen.

Tonight, Dothan Fire Engine 3 was able to talk on the Dothan P25 Motorola radio direct to the EMS units on the scene of the medical emergency where they were mutual aid requested.

COMMUNICATIONS is the key important factor to emergency response. And I, Rickey Stokes, do not like to brag on things that I made happen. But I have to say, when I heard them talking direct and coordinating, which is for the best of a patient, it made me smile in thinking, I made that happen.

So all of the critics of Rickey Stokes, the commissioner calling the preacher on me and having the preacher call me, whatever is said about me... I do not really care about the credit, but knowing that something I made happen, which is huge in response and coordiation, worked.

The sad thing is in this case, the patient did pass away. This was a cancer patient with other health related issues. But the help needed was on the scene and responding.

This article is not meant to brag or that I want credit. It is just saying, at least something I kicked the ball on... worked.
