HODGESVILLE:   It was in the eary 1980's a group of men and women started meeting in Jeff Givens Store that was located on Hodgesville Road.

These men and women started developing plans for the Hodgesville Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Kenny Givens operated Jeff Givens Store.

As the plans were discussed, some 40 years ago, the group decided to have an annual Turkey Shoot on Thanksgiving Day.

With zero funding, and the need for fire protection in the Hodgeville Community, the group knew they had to do fund raising. They had to purchase fuel to operate the fire engines to respond to fires, and to purchase needed equipment.

The tradition that began in about 1983 with people like Kenny Givens, James Ralph Godwin, Duane Godwin, Lee Peacock, Dennis Hall and others of which I can not name, has continued for 40 years. Each Thanksgiving Day a huge crowd showed up at the Hodgesville Fire Station for a time of men and women to participate in the Annual Turkey Shoot.

The Annual Turkey Shoot allowed Hodgeville Volunteer Fire Department to begin and work to serve and protect the Hodgeville Community.

About three years ago someone else in the Ashford Community started a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Shoot. The Hodgesville Volunteer Fire Department watched over the past three years and those attending Hodgesville were not showing up as they had over the past 40 years. A lot were going to the Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot in Ashford.

Last year the Hodgesville Volunteer Fire Department, in conversation with Rehobeth Fire - Rescue decided to end the 40 year tradition at Hodgesville. And on December 21, Hodgesville Volunteer Fire and Rehobeth Fire - Rescue will join hands and put on a Christmas Turkey Shoot.

So on Thanksgiving Day, the 40 year tradition for Hodgesville Volunteer Fire Department came to an end in year 2023.
