MONTGOMERY—A record number of Alabama students have taken the ACT exams in 2024, according to the Alabama State Department of Education (ALDSE).
In 2024, more than 12,000 Alabama students took the ACT, a 15% increase from the 10,400 students who took the test in 2023.
ALDSE reports an estimated 100% of graduates took the test, with 94% participating at least once as part of school-day testing.
The ACT is typically $69 to take the test without the writing portion; the ACT with writing is $94, according to the ACT website.
ALDSE says the State Board of Education has made it possible to offer waivers to let students take the college entry test for free. They say making free testing available has contributed to an additional 44% of students taking the test this year.
Furthermore, students who take the test more than once tend to see improvement in their scores.
While more students taking the test usually means a lower average score for the entire state, Alabama stayed steady at an average score of 18 out of 36. Only Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and Oklahoma scored lower than Alabama, according to 2023 scoring data.
