DOTHAN—Dr. Dennis Coe, superintendent for Dothan city schools, announced he plans to retire in 2025.
He said he plans to serve out the rest of his contract, which ends in June.
Coe has worked for 37 years in public education. He's been DCS superintendent for the past five years.
Among his accomplishments at the top of DCS, he cites increased enrollment, lowered teacher turnover, new school classrooms, school renovations, HVAC improvements, renovations for extracurricular buildings, school resource officer expansions, and bus fleet improvements.
This school year marks the first time in a decade DCS has seen increased enrollment.
While he cites a lengthy list of accomplishments, the announcement of his upcoming retirement is coming alongside concerns from area parents about teacher staffing shortages.
Gayla White, an area grandparent, said the 6th grade center is short-staffed, lacking teachers for English/Language Arts and Science for most of the current school year.
