COTTONWOOD—If you take a look at the lot between Cottonwood First Baptist and Cottonwood High School, you’ll notice hundreds of crosses.

These crosses were put up to honor Cottonwood’s deceased combat veterans.

The original organizer, Homer Spooner, sadly passed away; but Cottonwood Community Church Pastor Stan Sullivan decided to pick up the effort.

Houston County Commissioner Tracy Adams gathered JROTC students to help put up over 300 crosses in honor of lost veterans.

Sullivan said the effort to put up the crosses was "a God thing."

"I was watering the ground so we could get them in the ground, and then it rained two inches," he said. The rain made the ground soft enough to plant the crosses.

The crosses display the names and wars the deceased veterans fought in.

They are placed far enough apart so visitors can walk around and see the names.
