Sheriff Donald Valenza Begins 46th Year As Houston County Sheriff

HOUSTON COUNTY:     This week Donald Valenza began his 46th year with Houston County Sheriff Department.

Coming to Dothan from New Orleans to play baseball at Wallace College, Donald Valenza started with Houston County Sheriff Department in 1979 as a Corrections Deputy. Beginning his work in a jail constructed in 1938. The Sheriff was A.B. Clark and the department had about 24 Deputies.

In 2018 Donald Valenza was elected to his second term as Houston County. Having first been appointed by the Governor of Alabama to fill the unexpired term of then Sheriff Andy Hughes who resigned to take a position with ALEA.

In 2022 Donald Valenza was elected for his third term as Sheriff of Houston County. Sheriff Donald Valenza is the first person to be the Sheriff that worked in the Houston County Sheriff Department when he became Sheriff. Valenza was Chief Deputy Sheriff under then Sheriff Andy Hughes.

Valenza has worked for Sheriff A.B. Clark, Sheriff Lamar Hadden, Sheriff Lamar Glover, Sheriff Andy Hughes and then became Sheriff himself.

Today the Houston County Sheriff Department has close to 100 deputies, around 70 plus corrections deputies. The jail maintains over 400 inmates the Sheriff is responsible for. In all schools in the county the Sheriff has School Resource Deputies. Currently Donald Valenza serves as President of the Alabama Sheriff Association.
